Barsha Mongol is celebrated in Bengal to welcome the Monsoon season, which normally arrives by the middle of June. The rains have a special importance in the agricultural economy of the State and have found a pride of place in Bengali literature, poems and music. The festival of Barsha Mongol was popularized during the time of Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore.
